The way to Multibooting: VMware & VirtualBox

This is all for those who try many operating systems at the same time... and those who want to test a dose of the newly released operating system...with out making any changes to ur Master Boot Record or to ur current system... VMware is having only windows versions, but virtual box is available in windows and linux.

U don't need to worry about partitioning if u r not aware of it. Here u can specify any of your harddisk drives for the purpose of storage for the other operating systems... The guest operating systems will use the free space available in the windows without harming anything to your files...

  • u don't specifically need the installation cd/dvd of the operating system... an image file in .iso format will also do the same...

  • u can create the files in the guest and can restrict the amount of HDD occupied by them...

  • u can allocate no: of processors for the guest operating system out ur dual/quad core processor...

  • u can specify the amount of RAM for the guest since this ...

so a lot of freedom and customization... no risks of careless paritioning....

u can download vmware from a torrent or online sharing website....

Let ur system boot: fixing MBR

Usually after installation of linux probably the chain loader of the previous windows XP will be overwritten by the bootloader of the linux. That's not a problem... liinux will take care of ur windows... If the situation is just opposite... ie u are installing Windows after linux...

u will get a headache, coz u can't boot to your liinux....This post is not the solution for this problem.. To boot all the Operating systems u may need to reinstall the grub..This topic is already discussed in the previous post.

Here i will explain the steps to reload your boot loader of the windows XP after the deletion of the linux OS....ie u have only windows as the OS. all u need is the installation disk of Windows XP.

>> To restore the MBR, boot ur machine using windows XP CD. Choose 'Rescue mode' when asked, and get to the command prompt when asked.

eg.. In rescue mode the operating systems in the machine are listed as follows..

1. C:\WINDOWS

press 1 to get the command prompt of the windows. Then execute the following commands..

FIXMBR [Enter]
FIXBOOT [Enter]

Once you're done reboot your computer and everything should be fine....

In the cases when ur grub is corrupted, u can recover ur grub with any of the live distribution of the linux. This already discused in the post

improve the speed & load time of firefox

These are tricks that will improve the speed & load time of firefox. And you will be able to surf faster..especially in dialup connections

Type about:config in the address bar, Then look for the following
entries, and make the corresponding changes.

1.network.http.max-connections = 64
2.network.http.max-connections-per-server =32
3.network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy =16
4.network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server = 10
5.network.http.pipelining = true
6.network.http.pipelining.maxrequests = 200
7.network.http.proxy.pipelining = true
8.network.http.proxy.version = 1.0
9.network.http.request.max-start-delay = 0

Lastly right-click anywhere and select New > Integer. Name it
nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to 0. This value is
the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves...

You might have noticed that Firefox performs poorly when you surf for a long time or open lots of tabs at once. Many wrongly believe that this is due to some memory leak caused by extensions (even, I used to believe this).This is actually caused because Firefox stores 50 most recently visited websites in a memory session inorder to speed up the pageload of the previously visited site.Average web surfer tend to visit only 3 – 5 websites out of the previously visited websites, so you can reduce the resource hog by changing the memory threshold to 6 (or anything below 50).

This can be done by typing "about:config" in your Firefox address bar and search for

browser.sessionhistory.max_entries

Right click on that entry and choose modify. Now set the value for 5 (or anything lower than 50).

Reduce RAM usage when Firefox is minimized

This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so it’s definitely worth a go.

Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New > Boolean. Name it

config.trim_on_minimize and set it to TRUE.

You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.

Limit RAM usage

If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us.
Again, go to about:config, filter

browser.cache and select

browser.cache.disk.capacity...... It’s set to 50000,

but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.
